Tohoku University based in Sendai, Japan, is the world leading institution in the field of spintronics. It has held a position as a leading centre for research in magnetism dating back over 100 years when Professor Kotaro Honda studied the origin of domains and the anisotropy in iron. Currently there are many major research efforts in the field of materials for spintronics and spintronic devices at Tohoku University involving over 15 academic staff and more than 20 students studying in the field.

The University of York has a long standing cooperation agreement with Tohoku University covering a wide range of disciplines but principally involving a collaboration between the research group of

Professors Atsufumi Hirohata and Kevin O’Grady with the research groups of Professors Hideo Ohno and Koki Takanashi of the Research Institute for Electrical Communications (RIEC) and the Institute of Materials Research (IMR) at Tohoku University respectively. This collaboration has been widely supported via an arrangement through the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) via their Core-to- Core Programme with the work at York being funded through a substantial grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) here in the UK. This collaboration has led to a series of very high profile symposia which was initiated as long ago as 2003.

Each year Tohoku University organises an International Summer School in Spintronics which is generally held on their campus in Sendai, Japan. However for 2017, and as part of the JSPS Core-to- Core Programme the Summer School is to be held here in York. The summer school will be funded through the EPSRC Core-to- Core funding.

The summer school will be held in the Debeye lecture theatre in the York Plasma Institute adjacent to the university campus from the 26 to 28 July 2017.

Attendance at the summer school is free for students registered for an MSc or PhD at all universities with interests in spintronics in the UK.

Programme

Three days of lectures and talks

The programme for what is now known as the York-Tohoku Summer School in Spintronics involves a blend of invited speakers (being those that hold permanent academic positions and having a high level of expertise in specific relevant fields associated with spintronics) and approximately an equal number of talks to be given by existing students from the research groups.

The academic invited speakers are:

  • Bryan Hickey (Univ. Leeds, UK)

  • Stephen McVitie (Univ. Glasgow, UK)

  • Joseph Barker (Tohoku Univ., Japan)

  • Justin Llandro (Tohoku Univ., Japan)

  • Robert Carpenter (Seagate Technology, Derry, UK)

  • Kevin O'Grady (Univ. York, UK)

  • Gonzalo Vallejo-Fernandez (Univ. York, UK)

  • Matt Probert (Univ. York, UK)

  • Stuart Cavill (Univ. York and Diamond Light Source, UK)

  • Atsufumi Hirohata (Univ. York, UK)

Travel and Accommodation

Unfortunately the summer school is not able to provide travel expenses for students wishing to attend the summer school. Similarly we are unable to support accommodation for attendees.

Accommodation can be booked via the university’s accommodation office.

We recommend that those with sufficient budget attempt to reserve rooms in Franklin House but for those with more modest means it is recommended that you book into Halifax Court, both of which are within easy walking distance of the summer school venue in the Spring Lane building.

All daytime refreshments during the summer school i.e. morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, are provided free of charge for all participants. Similarly students not based in York are invited to attend the social functions, including the afternoon visit to Whitby.

Because of a significant demand for short term accommodation at the university during the summer students wishing to register and attend the summer school are requested to do so as soon as possible.
